Hinterland

A small guide to the Romagna hinterland,
discovering villages, nature
and food and wine specialties.

I like Romagna, especially the hinterland, because if you stop someone to ask for information, they tell you their whole life story."

quote by Alessandro Baricco

Romagna is not just sea. You have probably heard this phrase hundreds of times, now I want to show you why. This video by Ivano Marescotti perfectly summarizes the essence of Romagna . A territory that includes the beaches of fun but also wonderful villages of the hinterland, where you can breathe a medieval air and, at the same time, the sea breeze.

For you, who are thinking of a holiday on the Riviera Romagnola, I have prepared a short guide to the hinterland of Romagna . A small idea of everything you could enjoy and discover during your stay.

MEDIEVAL VILLAGES

Not everyone knows this, but Romagna is a land of castles and medieval villages.
The fortresses that overlook these villages can all be visited and from them you can enjoy a wonderful view of Romagna.

Here are my 5 favorite destinations:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Santarcangelo of Romagna
๐Ÿ‘‰ Saint Leo
๐Ÿ‘‰ Mondaino
๐Ÿ‘‰ Longiano
๐Ÿ‘‰ Saint Agatha Feltria
๐Ÿ‘‰ Pennabilli

ALL OF SANTARCANGELO

A few kilometers from Bellaria Igea Marina you will find the village of Santarcangelo. I recommend you visit it in the afternoon and then treat yourself to an aperitif at sunset in one of the many bars that liven up the streets of the center.

MUST SEE

The Malatesta Fortress or Castle of Paolo and Francesca, the Bell Tower, the Parish Church of San Michele Arcangelo, Porta Cervese, Piazza delle Monache.

MUST TASTE

Among the many shops and restaurants, we mention two: the La Sangiovesa tavern with interiors designed by the poet and screenwriter of Fellini, Tonino Guerra and the Osteria Ottavino , one of the most typical taverns of the ancient village, in the beating heart of this magical little town.

A LITTLE SECRET

The underground of Santarcangelo is crossed by tunnels, caves and ancient escape routes. I recommend a guided tour of this wonderful and mysterious underground Santarcangelo.

OPPORTUNITIES TO RETURN

San Michele Fair (or "Bird Fair") - end of September
San Martino Fair (or "Becchi Fair") - November
Goblets of Stars - August
Flowered Balconies - May
International Festival of Theatre in the Square - July

A WALK WITH YOUR PARTNER

Romagna has always been the "Land of Motors" and not only because the greatest motorcycling champions were born here or for the spectacle of the MotoGP in Misano.
If we talk about pure driving fun , views, etc. well, Romagna has few equals.
You can grind out kilometers and kilometers immersed in wonderful panoramas, cross small inhabited villages where you can decide whether to stop to taste some specialty or cross, and continue to swing between the curves, now wide now narrow, now uphill now downhill.

Here are some of the best itineraries:

Romagna is also very rich in roads and routes that make it a paradise for cycling tourism among the hills of Valmarecchia, Montefeltro, Valconca and all the hinterland of Romagna and Marche.

Here are some routes, a "taste" of some of the thousands of itineraries to discover a land that has cycling in its blood:

SOFT routes:

๐Ÿ‘‰ San Vito - Santarcangelo
๐Ÿ‘‰ Verucchio
๐Ÿ‘‰ Cornacchiara

EASY routes:

๐Ÿ‘‰ San Marino
๐Ÿ‘‰ Saint Leo
๐Ÿ‘‰ Montetiffi and Perticara
๐Ÿ‘‰ Saludecio and Mondaino

POWER routes:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Montevecchio - Pantani Monument
๐Ÿ‘‰ Overview of Fiorenzuola di Focara
๐Ÿ‘‰ Novecolli (short route)
๐Ÿ‘‰ San Bartolo (mountain bike)
๐Ÿ‘‰ Furlo Gorge

The Romagna hinterland is a planet to discover, in every season.
It is ideal for lovers of slow tourism , for people who like to admire the landscapes, discover the alleys of the villages and taste traditional dishes.

If you decide to come here on holiday I recommend you take the time you need to enjoy all of Romagna.
